Our members are
involved in helping Zone G-5 organize events and activities,
such as pubs and bingo games, held at the Perley and Rideau
Veterans’ Health Centre.
Our branch also coordinates
a hospital/home visiting program where volunteers reach out
to fellow members and veterans in hospitals and retirement
and long-term care facilities. These dedicated team members
provide companionship and social interaction, and these
connections allow us to identify any needs that should be
addressed.
If you know of a shut-in or ill branch member who would like
to receive a visit or a phone call or if you can spare a few
hours a week to be part of our team, please let us know:
visitation480@gmail.com.
We offer members of our community a number of volunteer
opportunities, we organize activities to correspond with
FUSE and other neighbourhood celebrations, and we have special
rental rates for our facilities for local charitable groups.
We also support three local cadet corps.
Through our Westboro Legion Poppy Trust Fund, we donate to
veterans’ organizations and causes such as the Ottawa
Veterans Service Bureau and Leave the Streets Behind, a
program for homeless and near-homeless veterans. In May, for
example, we donated $10,000 to the Perley & Rideau Veterans’
Health Centre. The money will be used to purchase five new
Hi-Lo beds for this long-term care facility.

Proceeds from our Wednesday night bingo games go to charity
as do the proceeds from several other events such as our
Down East kitchen parties and Trivia Challenge for Charity
tournaments. We have contributed to such organizations as
the Ottawa Food Bank, the CHEO Foundation, Ottawa
Neighbourhood Services, VETS Canada, and the
Military Family Resource Centre, National Capital Region.
